Always

As you know I love a good quote and I also enjoyed the Harry Potter books and movies. My favourite scene from all the movies is when we finally realise just how much Snape loved Lily. It’s all thanks to the incredible Alan Rickman and what he does with the one word “always.  It sends shivers down my spine each and every time I watch it. I have a pillow with the word ‘always’ printed on it and it sits on our bed. It’s there to remind me that Greg is my always. Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favourite. I don’t need reminding right now but perhaps a future Rachel will need to see it in order to recall that he is my special person. I wish I didn’t need reminders but I also like being prepared, hence the pillow.

We all have people like this - ‘always’ people. Sometimes it’s a grandad who just adored you, or it’s a favourite teacher that ‘got’ you. If we are really lucky, we find that it’s our life partner. Whoever these people are please tell them today just how precious they are to you; we all need reminding.

We spend so much time as humans putting off things. We hold onto scented candles for too long and are then disappointed they have no fragrance. Or we have plates that can only be used for when then Queen visits us, (spoiler alert) she died a while back - she is not coming.

We need to light our candles, chip our crockery and generally just revel in the fact that we are alive on planet earth right now. We also need to tell our special people that they are just that - special.

I think that part of the Harry Potter magic is found in that letter from Hogwarts. Deep down we all want to get a white letter with a red seal from that particular institution, don’t we? We all want to find out that we are actually a little bit magic. We want to be slightly set apart from our peers however we are Kiwis … so not too separate.

We are far too swift to cut down our tall poppies.  I say let them soar, who knows what incredible things they might produce.

Let them go seek the great ‘perhaps’ because they will undoubtedly bring us back precious gems.
