I have been thinking recently about that old saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure".

It got me pondering on what I consider treasure.  I think we can all agree that I would consider treasure even more treasury if it’s in miniature form.

I believe treasure needs to make us happy at our very core.  It needs to be something you fall in love with at five years old and yet you still consider it a prized possession at eighty-five-year-old.

Treasure needs a story and if there are more than one that’s even better!

Treasure needs to fill me up and not suck the life out of me.

Tangible treasure is something you would run back into a building to retrieve.  It’s something you leave to those you love when you are gone.

The sad thing is that some treasures of one generation will end up becoming trash of the next. I suspect it has always been so.

Trash on the other hand is easy to describe - it’s whatever we no longer want.  We make a choice and then discard the item, practice or idea.

While doing this list for myself I realised that many of the things I treasure are intangible. I treasure the love I have for family and friends. There is no tangible evidence of love other than our belief in it.

I treasure being a dog Mum and I know that Gabe adores me, on this one point we have some potential proof. That tail does wag! The sceptics however would say we have simply trained our dogs well. Those of us with fur babies know it’s a joyful two-way love between human and animal and both are the better off.

I also treasure the nature I see around me; on many days I believe it fills up my soul but I have no proof of that.

Some would say that my belief in God is intangible. I would beg to differ. The most significant decision I have made in my life has been to choose God for myself. I was ten years old when I did that but I knew exactly what I was doing.

Given that we cannot take any of the tangible with us when we leave this earth, I believe choosing the intangible things suits me just fine :-)
