It’s the first day in almost a week where I had enough energy to do non-essential tasks. I have just been feeling weary, tired and very old. I owe people responses to emails and lots of texts but I just didn’t have it in me!
One of the key things is sleep – if I get over five hours its going to be a good day. Earlier in the week I was supposed to work at the op shop and then visit my Mum. It’s usually my favorite day of the week but I didn’t get to do either because I had a full two hours of sleep. Driving like that is just stupid.
Greg bumped into a friend in the weekend and it turns out her husband also has early onset alzheimer's. He has gone immediately onto medication as well as trying a few herbal remedies. Some have worked well and others make little difference. I am trying out organic mushroom extract of lion’s mane which can help with clarity and focus.
The medication that is available for early onset alzheimer's does make a difference particularly with memory. However, for reasons nobody can explain it only works for around two years. The thing you need to do is work out when you are losing memory but not the really important stuff and go on the medication at that point. I fluctuate so much at the moment I would have no idea how to measure that with any clarity.
Over the Christmas break I really took a few steps backwards in many areas. The most concerning was fainting which I understand is because not enough blood is getting to my brain. There were other things and it made both of us start the discussion about going on the medication sooner rather than later. I don’t want to lose too much more because I want to be able to talk about my shared memories with those that I love.
I feel like we are almost there and of course as with any medication it takes 6-8 weeks to kick in.
I will keep you posted on what we decide to do. I will also let you know how the Lion’s mane mushroom extract pills go down.
